Players I love to watch: Sergej Milinković-Savić

While I understand that, yes, Sergej could be considered a “one season wonder” to some Lazio fans because of his 2017/18 campaign, I think Milinkovic-Savic needs some more love from his club’s fan base. Lazio and their supporters haven’t been fond of Sergej this season, who has found himself on the bench a lot more this season.

However, I love watching Sergej play football. The big man just towers over many players in Serie A, and I think his strength on the ball as well as his technique is crucial for a team in a league like Serie A, with most players in the Italian league not being giants in the midfield.

Sergej Milinkovic-Savic

When Sergej stepped foot onto the pitch today as his squad was tied 0-0 at the 80th minute, I noticed a calm look in his eyes. He stepped onto the pitch, controlled a ball with his chest, played a cool pass to his left back and started to run up the pitch to attack. His fellow midfielders followed him.

During the attack, the ball goes out for a corner. Lucas Leiva found Sergej’s head off of the corner, and Lazio were up 1-0 in the 82nd minute, just two minutes after Milinkovic-Savic stepped onto the pitch. A game changer.

Milinkovic-Savic heads the ball into the back of Atalanta’s net, lifting his side 1-0 in the Coppa Italia final.

Sergej has struggled this season, finding himself in and out of the starting lineup for Lazio, who favor Lucas Leiva in his role. But what does he do when he scores this goal to lift his side in the cup final? He runs to the tifosi, and kisses the crest of Lazio on his shirt. Bellissima.
